Equine Infectious Anemia

Hello, again. In our last blog, Squeaky was talking about the importance of not neglecting a horse’s weeping eye. Today I want to talk about the importance of getting your horse their Coggins test. What is a Coggins test? Well, it is a test that tells a vet whether a horse has contracted Equine Infectious Anemia or EIA or not. Is this important? Yes, very. There is no cure for EIA, and EIA positive horses must be immediatley separated from other horses and either quarantined (for life) or put down. It is transmitted from one horse to another through biting flies. Although a horse can live a long time with the disease, it will eventually kill it. Besides, you can’t take your horse anywhere without that yellow sheet of paper that says your horse has tested negative for the EIA virus. So, please, if you really love your horses, GET THEM TESTED!
